About The High School

The school began in 1957 in Banjul when a small Nursery/infant School with a handful of mainly European children moved to the veranda of the home of an English lady called Mrs Payne who lived at No. 1 Marina, Banjul. When the school increased in size it moved to the bottom storey of the old war time observation tower on the beach. It was now called Marina School and had a mixture of children of professional people of many nationalities who wished their children to receive a Primary Education similar to that available in the U.K.

As this expansion occurred, the necessity for a stable governing organization became apparent and in1968 the Parent Teachers Association was formed. Its primary aims were to find permanent premises for the school and to employ suitably qualified staff, thereby providing continuity in the running of the school. Several professional people, including Mr. Sam George and Ian Edgar were very much involved in the development of the school at the time and worked hard to get permanent premises for the school built. After several more moves the school was finally officially opened in July 1973 in buildings situated next to the Gambia High School. At the time Mrs. Elizabeth Smith was Head Teacher and the School consisted of 2 classes with a total of 32 children.

The school which began as a Nursery moved to a new site in Fajara in 1989 and Mr. Charles S.Y. Jow was then the Chairman of the PTA Committee whose tireless devoting to Marina School was staggering. He planted most of the trees and shrubs in the Primary School and never tolerated low standards in school infrastructure or teacher recruitment or children’s work. He was also a key pioneers of the High School project which was opened in 1993. The school has expanded throughout its lifetime and now covered the full range from Nursery to Pre University education. Marina has become established as the leading private International School in the Gambia and is over subscribed at every age group.

Marina International School, the Gambia is a well-established co-educational day school that offers British National Curriculum at all four Key Stage leading to the International Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), and the A’ Levels by the University of Cambridge International Examination Centre. SAT Tests are done at Key Stage Two. The School is owned by parents and is governed by an elected Parent Teacher Association (Board of Governors) which has a final say in any decision affecting the running of the school.
